Dr. Chang Lu

is both an active musician and dedicated instructor based in Los Angeles, she graduated with a Doctoral of Musical Arts Degree from USC Thornton School of Music in flute performance studying with Jim Walker, former Los Angeles Philharmonic principal flutist and Gary Woodward, former Los Angeles Opera principal flutist. She also earned minor degrees in Music Theory, Orchestral Conducting and Early Music Baroque Flute Performance.

Dr. Chang Lu is both an active musician and dedicated instructor based in Los Angeles. Born into a family of musicians, she was introduced to piano at the young age of four, and the flute at age of nine. She has given performances on both instruments throughout her music career. Having attended elementary, middle and high schools that were attached to a music conservatory, she has been a professionally trained musician since a young age. She started to provide private flute lessons, piano lessons, aural skills and music theory classes already while in high school in China. In the US, Dr. Lu has appeared in many Hollywood movie sound tracks including Emmy’s nominated Netflix show “Chef’s Table”. She has also performed as principal flutist with several orchestras such as, Beverly Hills Symphony Orchestra, Hollywood Sinfonietta, Los Angeles Sinfonietta, Debut Symphony Orchestra, San Jose Youth Symphony, Fremont Flute Ensemble, USC Thornton Wind Ensemble, Thornton Symphony Orchestra, Thornton Opera Orchestra, among others. Dr. Lu has worked with many renowned conductors such as James Judd, James Conlon, Carl St. Clair, Gerard Schwarz, H.Robert Reynolds, Sharon Lavery, Larry Livingston and Michael Powers.

 

Dr. Lu graduated with a Doctoral of Musical Arts Degree from USC Thornton School of Music in flute performance studying with Jim Walker, former Los Angeles Philharmonic principal flutist and Gary Woodward, former Los Angeles Opera principal flutist. She also earned minor degrees in Music Theory, Orchestral Conducting and Early Music Baroque Flute Performance. At USC, Dr. Lu performed solo with the Thornton Baroque Sinfonia Ensemble leading the group on the Telemann Flute Concerto. 

 

Dr. Lu was appointed as an adjunct flute instructor at USC. She have helped numerous undergraduate and graduate music minor and non-major flute students prepare for orchestral and school auditions, develop confidence in performing, exploring and achieving their short and long-term goals and guiding them through their artistic visions and concepts. Her students’ recent accomplishments include several 1st solo prizes in the Southwestern Youth Music Festival (SYMF) competition, 1st prize in the Hayfield Conservatory Concerto Competition, winning music scholarship from the Los Angeles City Elementary Schools Music Association, and acceptance at the Boston Conservatory at Berklee, Arizona State University School of Music and UC San Diego.

 

Dr. Lu have also served as the music director and conductor of the West Los Angeles Youth Symphony, as well as the assistant music director at Sinai Akiba Academy. Under her baton as music director and assistant music director some of her non-major and minor students have been appointed and received community service hours and presidential awards. They also count numerous acceptances at Harvard University, Columbia University, UC Berkeley, New York State University, Tulane University, to name a few. 

In 2019, Dr. Lu founded the Los Angeles Music Center, through which she have organized several music festivals in Los Angeles and Beijing, China. She have designed innovative music programs specifically to help young musicians explore their potential and creativity. Subjects covered in these programs include film music scoring, jazz improvisation, classical solo performance, and chamber music collaboration. She have recruited over 250 students from America and Asia for the past festivals and successfully encouraged intercultural music studies and experiences.
